What Is a Heat Pump and How Does It Work?

A heat pump is a low carbon heating system that takes natural warmth from the air outside and uses it to heat your home and your hot water.

Think of it like a fridge working in reverse. Instead of moving heat out, it brings heat in.

It might sound clever, and it is, but it’s also really simple:

  1. It collects warmth from outside.

A fan draws outdoor air over a coil filled with refrigerant. Even when it’s cold outside, there’s still heat in the air, and the refrigerant soaks it up.

  2. It boosts the temperature.

A compressor squeezes the refrigerant, which raises its temperature, just like a bike pump gets warm as you use it.

  3. It heats your water.

That heat is passed into the water in your heating system.

  4. It warms your home.

The warm water flows to your radiators or underfloor heating, and into your hot water cylinder, ready when you need it.

Air source heat pump Most common

The most common type is an air source heat pump, which sits outside your home, a bit like an air conditioning unit. It can extract heat from the air in temperatures as low as minus 20 degrees, so it’s more than compatible with the great British weather.

Why installation matters

A heat pump runs at a lower, steadier temperature than a boiler. To keep you comfortable and your bills low, it needs to be sized and set up correctly for your home. That’s exactly why choosing the right heat pump installer makes all the difference.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Up to £9,000 Off Your Heat Pump, While the Grant Is Available

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant that helps homeowners swap fossil fuel heating for a low carbon heat pump. It takes up to £9,000 off for homes heated by oil or LPG, and up to £7,500 for homes on gas. The grant comes straight off your quote, and as your heat pump installer, we take care of the application for you.

Why the grant exists

The government wants more homes to move to low carbon heating, for the planet, for our energy security and for the long-term cost of keeping the country warm.

  • A cleaner environment

Heating our homes is one of the UK’s biggest sources of carbon emissions. Moving away from burning gas and oil is one of the most effective ways to bring them down.

  • A greener grid every year

More of Britain’s electricity comes from wind, solar and other renewables every year. Because a heat pump runs on electricity, your heating gets cleaner as the grid does.

  • Energy independence

Gas and imported fuels are at the mercy of world events, and prices can climb sharply with little warning. Heat pumps reduce the UK’s reliance on them, and help protect your home from that volatility.

A superior system, worth getting right

A heat pump is a high-performance heating system that keeps your home comfortable while using far less energy than a boiler. It’s a long-term investment, and like any quality system, it isn’t a cheap swap.

It takes an experienced heat pump installer, with specialist, accredited engineers, to design and install a heat pump properly, along with quality equipment and materials. That’s exactly why the grant makes such a difference: it brings the cost down significantly, so it makes sense to take advantage of it while it’s on offer.

Could you be eligible?

  • You’re a UK homeowner
  • You’re replacing fossil fuel heating, such as a gas, oil or LPG boiler
Check Your Eligibility

Eligibility checks apply, and as your heat pump installer we’ll check this for you. Grant amounts and availability are set by the government and may change.

Heat Pump vs Gas Boiler

Two Ways to Heat Your Home.
One Is Far More Efficient.

A gas boiler makes heat by burning fuel. A heat pump moves heat that’s already in the outside air into your home. Here’s what that difference means for you.

Gas in Exhaust gases (CO₂) Bursts of high heat
Traditional

Gas boiler

A boiler burns gas to heat water for your radiators. Some heat is lost up the flue, and every unit of gas you burn releases carbon into the air.

Energy in 1 unit
Heat out ~0.9

You get back slightly less heat than the energy you pay for.

Free heat from the outside air Gentle, steady warmth No flue, no burning
The better way

Air source heat pump

A heat pump uses a little electricity to collect heat from the outside air and move it into your home. Nothing is burned, so there are no fumes and no flue.

Energy in 1 unit
Heat out 3–4

You get around three to four times more heat than the electricity you use.

Gas boilerAir source heat pump
How it makes heat Burns gas Moves heat from the outside air
Efficiency Around 0.9 units of heat for every unit of gas Around 3 to 4 units of heat for every unit of electricity
Emissions at home Releases carbon through the flue every time it runs No burning and no flue, so a much lower carbon footprint
How it feels Short bursts of high heat, then it cools off Gentle, even warmth throughout your home
Hot water Yes Yes, heated through a hot water cylinder
Government grant Not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme Up to £7,500 off for gas homes, or up to £9,000 for oil and LPG homes

Tried, Tested and Trusted

Heat Pumps Aren’t New. They’re Just New to Many UK Homes.

Heat pumps can feel like the latest thing, but the technology has been around for well over a century, and millions of homes around the world have relied on them for decades, including in some of the coldest countries on earth.

  • 40+

    Heat pumps per 100 homes

Norway, Sweden and Finland have more than 40 heat pumps for every 100 households, the highest in the world.

  • 1850s

    When it all began

The first heat pump was developed in the 1850s. The principles behind it have been refined and proven ever since.

  • Every

    Fridge in your kitchen

Your fridge uses the same technology, just in reverse. It’s been quietly doing its job in British homes for generations.

Proven in the coldest climates

The Nordic countries have some of the harshest winters in Europe, and they’re also where heat pumps are most popular. Families there have trusted them to heat their homes through freezing winters for years.

If they work well in Scandinavia, they’ll keep you more than comfortable through a British winter.

The UK is catching up

For decades, most British homes were built around cheap gas boilers, so heat pumps simply weren’t on most people’s radar. That’s changing fast, as more homeowners look for lower running costs and cleaner heating.

You’re not trying something experimental. You’re choosing a reliable, proven system, fitted by an experienced heat pump installer.

Ask Us Anything

If you can't see your question below, send us a message, we'd be happy to help.

The cost of installing a heat pump varies from home to home. Some properties are already well suited to a heat pump and need only minimal changes, while others may require additional preparation, such as insulation improvements, radiator upgrades or changes to pipework.

At TrueCare, we believe in getting things right from the start. We’ll assess your home’s heating needs and recommend a system designed around your property, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution. Your quote will be based on your specific home, your requirements and any work needed to help your heat pump perform effectively.

We’re also honest about whether a heat pump is the right choice for you. If your home needs significant upgrades before a heat pump is likely to perform well, we’ll explain what’s needed and help you understand whether it’s worth the investment. We’d rather give you honest advice than recommend an installation that isn’t right for your home.

You may also be eligible for a government grant to help towards the cost of installation. We’ll help you understand your options so you can make an informed decision.

A heat pump can help reduce your heating bills, but the savings depend on your home, your electricity tariff and how efficiently your system operates. Insulation, heating controls and the quality of the system design all play an important part.

That’s why choosing the right heat pump installer matters. At TrueCare, we look beyond simply fitting the equipment. We take the time to understand your property and design a system that can deliver the comfort and performance you need.

We’ll help you understand what to expect from your new heating system, so you can make a decision based on your home and your circumstances, rather than unrealistic promises about savings.

Many homes can benefit from a heat pump, including older properties, but every home is different. The best way to understand whether a heat pump is right for you is to have your property properly assessed. We do this at no cost.

We’ll look at factors such as your home’s insulation, heat loss, existing radiators, hot water requirements and available outdoor space. If improvements are needed to help your system perform well, we’ll explain what they are and why they matter.

We’re committed to recommending heat pumps where we believe they can work effectively. If your home needs some preparation first, we’ll be honest with you. We’d rather help you get things right than install a system that doesn’t deliver the results you deserve.

Absolutely! Heat pumps are a proven way to heat homes, and they’re already widely used in countries across Europe and beyond, including Sweden, Norway and Finland, where winters can be much colder than those in the UK.

Norway, Sweden and Finland have been using heat pumps successfully for years. Norway, in particular, has one of the highest rates of heat pump adoption in the world, showing just how effective the technology can be in challenging climates. If heat pumps can help keep homes warm in Scandinavian winters, they can certainly be a great option for many UK homes when properly designed and installed.

The key to getting the best from a heat pump is making sure it’s properly designed and installed for your property. Factors such as insulation, radiator sizing and your home’s heating requirements all make a difference. Choosing the right heat pump installer has a huge impact.

Choosing a heat pump installer is about more than comparing prices. You want a company that understands your home, takes pride in its work and cares about how your heating system performs long after installation day.

Look for an appropriately certified installer with experience in heat pump design and installation. Ask whether they’ll carry out a heat-loss assessment, explain their recommendations, provide a clear quotation and support you with the relevant paperwork and aftercare.

At TrueCare, we believe the quality of the design and installation makes all the difference. We’ll take the time to understand your requirements, recommend a suitable solution and explain the process clearly. Our focus is on doing the job properly and giving you confidence in your investment.

A typical heat pump installation by TrueCare takes around two to three days, although the exact timeframe depends on your property and the work involved.

Before we begin, we’ll explain what’s involved, including the removal of your existing heating system, the installation of your new heat pump and any necessary changes to radiators or pipework. We’ll also discuss what to expect regarding heating and hot water during the work.

We know that having work carried out in your home can be disruptive, so we aim to make the process as straightforward as possible. Our team will keep you informed, work carefully and make sure your system is properly installed and commissioned before the job is complete.

Not necessarily. Some homes can use their existing radiators, while others may benefit from larger radiators, improved insulation or changes to the heating system.

Heat pumps often operate at lower water temperatures than traditional boilers, so it’s important to check whether your radiators can deliver enough heat to keep your home comfortable. A proper heat-loss assessment helps establish what your property needs.

We won’t recommend upgrades without a reason. We’ll assess your home, explain any improvements that could help your heat pump perform efficiently and talk you through your options. Our aim is to find the right balance between comfort, performance and the overall cost of your installation.

Modern air source heat pumps are designed to operate quietly, although you’ll usually hear a gentle hum while the outdoor unit is running. The sound you experience depends on the model, where it’s installed and the surrounding environment.

The position of your heat pump matters, which is why we consider the layout of your property and the location of nearby windows, outdoor spaces and neighbouring homes when planning an installation.

Planning requirements depend on your property and the proposed installation. Some installations may qualify under permitted development rules, while others need additional checks or permission.

We’ll help you understand the practical considerations before work begins, so there are no unnecessary surprises and your heat pump is positioned with care.

There are several heat pump brands to choose from, and the best option for you will depend on your home, your heating requirements and your budget. Different manufacturers offer different features, warranties and system options, so it’s important to look beyond the brand name alone.

We’ll help you choose a heat pump that’s right for your property and designed to deliver the comfort and performance you need. We’ll consider factors such as your home’s heating demand, the system’s efficiency, reliability, noise levels and available aftercare.

We believe choosing the right heat pump is just as important as having it installed correctly. That’s why we’ll take the time to explain our recommendations and help you understand why a particular system suits your home, rather than simply recommending a product without considering your needs.

Not sure which heat pump is right for you? Ask our team, we’ll be happy to help.

Heat pumps aren’t new technology. They’ve been around for decades and are widely used around the world to heat homes and buildings. Countries such as Norway and Sweden have embraced them for years, demonstrating how well the technology can work, even in colder climates.

Like any heating system, the technology continues to improve, with modern heat pumps offering better efficiency, quieter operation and smarter controls. They’re designed to provide reliable heating and hot water throughout the year, including during the colder UK winter months.

At TrueCare, we understand that changing your heating system is a big decision. You want to know that you’re investing in something you can rely on. That’s why we focus on careful system design, quality installation and making sure a heat pump is right for your home before recommending one. We’ll answer your questions honestly and help you feel confident in your decision.
